About Us
The Ethiopian Society of Sociologists, Social Workers and Anthropologists (ESSSWA) was founded in June 1996 as a professional society of sociologists, social workers and anthropologists with full legal recognition in April 1997. Promoting professional competence and ethics through the profession of Sociology Social work and Anthropology are effectively, consistently and widely used in poverty alleviation, democratization processes, development endeavors and other social issues
Establishment
The Ethiopian Society of Sociologists, Social Workers and Anthropologists (ESSSWA) was founded in June 1996 as a professional society of sociologists, social workers and anthropologists with full legal recognition in April 1997.
ESSSWA was re-registered according to the new CSO law of 621/2001 by FDRE, Ministry of Justice, Charities and Societies Agency on 4 November 2009 as Ethiopian Residents Society after the decision was made by the general assembly held at Ras Amba Hotel.

Our mission is to represent the interests of the professionals of Sociology, Social work and Anthropology and advance the application of these disciplines for the well being of the Ethiopian Society

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Driven by its mission and legal mandate as well as the service needs and demands of its clients, partners and stakeholders; the primary goal of ESSWA is promoting professional competence and ethics in the disciplines of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology, and the widespread application of the disciplines in poverty reduction and development. The specific objectives can be summarized as follows:
- Promote the effective contribution of the professions of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology to the social, economic, political and cultural development of Ethiopia;
- Develop member’s professional competence and enhance their effective contribution to the country’s development in their fields of specialization;
- Assist Government, NGOs and the private sector and communities in translating the various development policies and strategies into action;
- Advocate for the creation of a more enabling environment, and the development of a vibrant civil society in the country; and
- Actively engage in policy analysis, research and advocacy with a view to nurturing pluralism and offering alternative options
STRATEGIES
- Carry out operational research on social and cultural factors with implications on policies and procedures to provide guidance;
- Create opportunities for members for exchange of ideas and experiences with other professional associations;
- Organise advocacy, discussion forums among members, professionals, policy legislatures and executives;
- Establish smooth and valid networking and mechanisms of information flow between members on the one hand and the association and key stakeholders (Government, Civil Society Organisations, private sectors and the public at large) at different levels.
Objectives
The key objectives of the society include:
- Ensure effective contribution of graduates of sociology, social work and anthropology to the social, economic, political and cultural development in Ethiopia;
- Improve members personal and professional competence so as to increase efficiency of effectiveness of ESSSWA to the country's build up process;
- Assist government, NGOs and private sectors in translating the diverse policies, SDPRP and MDGs in to action.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES
The supreme body of the association is the general assembly composed of all members. ESSSWA is managed by elected executive committee composed of nine individuals. The executive committee is elected by the General Assembly based on their competence, potential contribution and commitment to advance the objectives of the association. The committee is responsible to plan and monitor implementation of planned activities. The committee meets once in a month to ensure smooth operation of the association’s planned activities. The day to day routines are being tracked and implemented by administrative office bearers recruited by the association.
